Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love will be featured in the Nov/Dec 2013 Work & Labour edition of Briarpatch Magazine - one of Canada’s leading independent voices on issues of social justice and the environment. The cover art, with a focus on Maritime labourers was drawn by Kwentong Bayan illustrator, Althea Balmes.
On Sept 26, 2013, Governor Jerry Brown signed the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. This victory will have a real impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of workers. We congratulate all the groups including Mujeres Unidas y Activas, the Women’s Collective of Dolores Street Community Services, Filipino Advocates for Justice and the National Domestic Workers Alliance for making a difference in the long journey towards justice for domestic workers.
We were honoured to meet with Fiona Cruz and Lillian Galedo of Filipino Advocates for Justice. We shared stories from our comic book in collaboration with Live-in Caregivers in Canada, and listened to stories about the struggles and victories of domestic workers in California.
“We’re celebrating 40 years of gains while remaining aware of the big challenges ahead.”
- Lillian Galedo, Executive Director, Filipino Advocates for Justice.
