Artist Residency 2014

Kwentong Bayan Collective are Artists-in-Residence at Art City St. James Town this summer!

We will share how we work as a collective to make comics and produce collaborative art with children from the St. James Town neighbourhood. Our series of after-school and weekend workshops will explore themes of 
community, belonging, and friendship.

This program is funded by the Toronto Arts Council in partnership with Art City Toronto. 

Mayworks Festival: Labour + LOVE

Kwentong Bayan is proud to co-present Labour + LOVE - A Celebration of Caregivers  in collaboration with the Mayworks Festival.  This event features storytelling, spoken word, and musical performances.

Kwentong Bayan and CCESO (Caregiver Connections) will share stories by caregivers blended with live illustrations, projections, and audio soundscapes.

Special guests include Mahlikah Awe:ri, Lishai, Han Fernandez, PANTAYO, Zak’isha Brown & Randell Adjei.   Please visit our event page for more details.

Arts Residency: Comics For the People

Kwentong Bayan Collective is excited to be Artists-in-Residence with the FLAME: Fruit Loopz Art & Mentorship Program for April and May 2014.

We will share our process for making comics and facilitate a series of arts workshops for LGBTQI2S* Spectrum youth under 29.   Themes include  self care and community building. Our workshop series is named, Comics For The People, inspired by June Jordan's Poetry for the People.  This art & mentorship program is presented in collaboration with  S.O.Y. (Supporting Our Youth).

Graphic History Project

Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love has been selected to be a part of the Graphic History Project  presented by the Graphic History Collective (GHC). 

The GHC is supporting Althea and Jo to illustrate and write a 10 page mini-comic about the history of the Live-in Caregiver program and its impact on the lives of Filipina caregivers.  A collection of other comic book projects that explore radical graphic histories will be launched online in 2014-2015.  

The Graphic History Collective produced the comic book, May Day: A Graphic History of Protest, a historical account of May Day in Canada.  Thank you to Julia Smith, Paul Buhle, and the Graphic History Collective for supporting Kwentong Bayan: Labour of Love.
