Comic-making Workshop + Residency

Althea Balmes is facilitating a new comic-making program for Asian* youth, newcomer youth, new generation, 1.5, LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer/questioning, intersexual) and/or with disability between 16-29 who:
  • Have interest in being part of an art community;
  • Have the desire to hone their comic-making skills;
  • Want a positive space to share their experience of being Asian in Canada;
  • and want to explore their visual storytelling style with other Asian storytellers and cartoonists!
  • The deadline for submission is December 7th

Cartoons for Social Change

We are excited to be a part of the 5th Annual Ryerson Social Justice Week from October 5 to 9, 2015. The theme is “Social Justice and Democracy: Arts, Activism and the Academy”.

Kwentong Bayan Collective will facilitate the Art Tools Workshop: Cartoons For Social Change on October 6, 2015 from 4-6 PM.

Participants will generate ideas through mind-mapping, learn how to combine re-purposed images and doodles to create one-of-a-kind mixed media comics that explore social justice issues. We will have lots of materials to work with and folks are invited to bring their own images!

The book is an anthology of comics on Canadian labour history produced by the Graphic History Collective along with historian/editor, Paul Buhle.

Artist Residency 2014

Kwentong Bayan Collective are Artists-in-Residence at Art City St. James Town this summer!

We will share how we work as a collective to make comics and produce collaborative art with children from the St. James Town neighbourhood. Our series of after-school and weekend workshops will explore themes of 
community, belonging, and friendship.

This program is funded by the Toronto Arts Council in partnership with Art City Toronto.
